Midday Power Saver

Eligible Victorian electricity consumers can sign up to get three hours of free electricity in the middle of the day.

The Midday Power Saver offers free power to eligible Victorian electricity consumers in the middle of the day, when there is a lot of renewable energy coming from solar panels. This surplus of solar energy in the network helps to drive down wholesale electricity prices when the sun is shining.

The Victorian Government has introduced the Midday Power Saver to reduce demand on the electricity grid during peak times, such as in the evening and early morning hours, and shift some of that demand to the middle of the day.

The Midday Power Saver is available to residential electricity consumers who have:

  • a smart meter and

  • an account with a licensed electricity retailer that has 1,000 or more customers.

You don’t have to have solar panels at your residence to qualify for the Midday Power Saver.

If you decide to sign up to the Midday Power Saver, you will get three hours of free electricity usage between 11 am and 2 pm every day, including weekends. You will be able to get up to 24 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of free electricity during the free power period each day.

The Midday Power Saver is not automatically applied to your account. You must contact your electricity retailer to switch to a participating plan.

Some consumers living in embedded networks may be able to access the Midday Power Saver. However, this will depend on whether they are supplied by a licensed retailer, have a compliant smart meter and can currently choose a market offer. Consumers should contact their retailer to discuss their circumstances and whether the offer is available to them.

For more information, visit the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action's webpage on the Midday Power Saver.

How much you’ll save on the Midday Power Saver will depend on how much of your electricity usage you can shift to the free power period during the middle of the day.

For example, if you can use appliances such as hot water heat pumps, dishwashers, clothes dryers and electric vehicle chargers during the free power period, then the Midday Power Saver may be right for you.

Electricity prices outside of the free power period may be higher than your current electricity plan, so any savings will depend on how much of your usage you can shift to the middle of the day. If you can’t shift enough of your electricity usage to the middle of the day, then you could end up worse off on the Midday Power Saver than your current plan.

Contact your electricity retailer and ask about switching to the Midday Power Saver. Your retailer must:

  • tell you if the Midday Power Saver might be right for you, based on how you use electricity during the day

  • offer information about prices and, where possible, an estimate of the cost impact to you

  • tell you about other plans that may be more suitable for you, based on your electricity usage.

The Victorian Energy Compare website (compare.energy.vic.gov.au) can also help you compare electricity offers, including the Midday Power Saver and others in the market.

If you decide to sign up to the Midday Power Saver:

  • you can change your mind after signing up (your retailer must offer a ‘cooling off’ period of 10 days)

  • you can switch to another plan at any time

  • you will not have to pay an exit fee.

You can get in touch with your electricity retailer for problems about the Midday Power Saver. If you're not happy with the outcome or can't reach your retailer, we are here to help.
