About meters generally
You may have a number of different meters installed for each of the services at your property.
It’s worth noting that customers don’t usually own the meter—it’s owned by the electricity or gas distributor or the water corporation.
About water meters
The water meter is usually located close to the front the property, often just inside the front fence. Each meter has a unique serial number.
The water corporation websites have useful information about how to read a water meter.
There’s more information in our meters fact sheet.
If you think the water meter may be faulty
You can ask to have the meter tested, but if it is found to be operating within standards, you may be required to pay for the test.
In our experience, most tested meters are found to be operating within the Australian standards. If they're not, they're more likely to be running slowly rather than fast. This means you're more likely to have been undercharged than overcharged.
We suggest you try to work out whether something else is causing your high bills before you ask for a meter test.
