Smart MetersWhy smart meters?
The Government has decided that every Victorian residence will have their meter changed to a smart meter so that electricity use may be better managed. These meters record your usage every 30 minutes and will eventually provide all meter readings to your distribution company remotely. Eventually, everyone in Australia will have a smart meter.
Smart meters are now considered industry standard across the world. Already smart meters have been rolled out across parts of Italy, Canada, United States, Turkey, New Zealand and the Netherlands. There are current projects to rollout smart meters in countries like the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Germany.

Smart meters assist in the management of electricity usage and have been considered instrumental in tackling climate change issues.
The ability for consumers to have access to their own usage information will enable people to reduce and shift their consumption and reduce their 'carbon footprint'.
Smart meters are sometimes called advanced interval meters or interval meters and some people may have had an interval meter installed at their property over the last few years. Current interval meters do not have remote capabilities, so they too will need to be replaced with a new smart meter.
