Common causes of an unexpected high bill
A back bill — for some reason, the retailer bills you for a longer period than usual

A catch-up bill — your last bill was estimated and the estimate didn’t cover your actual usage, so you get an extra ‘catch-up’ amount in the next bill after your meter is read

Maybe you didn’t pay all of your last bill — this one may include the bit you didn’t pay

You’ve had visitors so you’ve been using more energy or water than usual

A billing mistake

Somebody in your household has been spending more time at home

One of your appliances isn’t working properly — e.g. your refrigerator has broken seals

You have a new appliance

Unusual weather has meant you’ve been using more heating or cooling than normal

The price of LPG changed based on the wholesale price.
