The ESC’s Electricity Distribution Code and Gas System Distribution Code set minimum standards that electricity and gas distributors must meet for things such as quality and reliability of supply, information to consumers and complaints handling.
The ESC has published several guidelines for energy companies. The voltage variation guideline is covered above. Others include:
- Energy Product Disclosure — aimed at improving the information available to customers about energy market contract offers
- Energy Retailers’ Financial Hardship Policies — this sets out requirements for a compliant hardship policy
There are also provisions in the Electricity Industry Act and the Gas Industry Act which operate to benefit customers, including:
- a prohibition on charging small domestic customers a late payment fee
- the wrongful disconnection payment — see our webpage on Disconnection and restriction for debt.
