The Commonwealth Government Utilities Allowance assists older people with the cost of services such as energy, water, rates and sewerage. It's paid to people receiving:
- income support, including payments such as the Age Pension, Austudy or Parenting Payment
- Disability Support Pension
- Carer Payment
- Wife Pension
- Widow B Pension
- Bereavement Allowance
- Mature Age Allowance
- Widow Allowance, and
- Partner Allowance
The payment is $500 a year for singles and $250 a year for each eligible member of a couple. It is adjusted in line with the CPI twice a year — and paid in four instalments (quarterly) to eligible recipients, coming with the normal Centrelink payment.
For further details, see Centrelink’s webpage on the Utilities Allowance or phone Centrelink on 13 2300.
