An imperial meter measures gas consumption in cubic feet.  Less than three per cent of all Victorian gas households have this kind of meter installed.  Consumption of gas is measured by reading the values off clock faces (comparable to electricity analogue meters).  When reading an imperial meter, please note that the hands rotate in different directions (as shown by the arrow beneath each dial). Standing directly in front of the meter, read the dials from left to right. If a hand is between two numbers, note the lower number, except when the hand is between 0 and 9 in which case, read 9.  For gas meters, read the most left four dials only. The label above each dial indicates how many “tens of units” that the number relates to. In the example on the right, the reading is '1394', with this representing 1,394 cubic feet.
