History

EWOV was set up as a company limited by guarantee, legally separate from, and independent of, the energy and water companies and government.

In accordance with the EWOV Limited Constitution and the EWOV Charter, EWOV Ltd. established EWOV as an independent dispute resolution scheme — and appointed an Ombudsman to be responsible for the day-to-day operation of that scheme.

Opening to full service in May 1996, EWOV is Australia’s (and we think the world’s) oldest and largest energy Ombudsman scheme. Originally, it handled electricity cases only. In 1999, it expanded to include natural gas. In 2001, it expanded further to include metropolitan, regional and rural water. Since 2005, it has also dealt with LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) cases.

Since 1996, the EWOV scheme has handled over 197,000 cases.
